You can import audio into Captivate that's in MP3 or WAV format. To import an audio track, do the following:
- Choose Audio > Import.
- Browse to the file you want to import and click Open. Or, you can import an audio track by right-clicking the slide to which you want to add the audio track, then choosing Properties, selecting the Audio tab, and clicking the Import button.
- Browse to the file you want to import and click Open.
Captivate imports the audio file and converts it into MP3 format if necessary.
If the audio file is longer than the slide, Captivate will display the Audio Split Options dialog box. You will have three options:
_ Extend the display time of the selected slide to fit this audio file: Use this option only if you are importing audio for the current slide. Captivate will put the entire audio track on the slide and increase the slide's display time.
_ Edit the audio timing and manually distribute the audio file over several slides: Use this option if you want to edit the timing of the imported audio file and distribute it manually over several slides. In the Edit Audio Timing dialog box, you can specify how your audio files are distributed. When you import the audio, slide dividers appear at the end of the audio waveform. To manually distribute the audio across a number of slides, do the following:
- Click the Play button or press the spacebar to hear the audio.
- When you want the audio to be split onto the next slide, click the Start Next Slide button (or press Ctrl+S). The slide divider for Slide 2 moves over to the point where the insertion point is located.
- Repeat Steps 1 and 2 until the entire audio file has been distributed as desired.
- Click OK. Captivate distributes the audio file and creates a new audio track for each slide.
_ Retain the current timing and distribute this audio file over several slides: Use this option if you want Captivate to distribute the audio across several slides without altering the timing. Captivate will do it automatically.
Adding Background Audio
Captivate lets you add a soundtrack in the background of an entire movie.
To add background audio, do the following:
- Choose Movie > Preferences.
- Select the Background Audio tab.
- Select one of the following buttons:
_ Record New to record a new audio file
_ Import to import an existing audio file
_ Audio Library to select a clip from the Audio Library
The Background Audio tab in the Movie Preferences dialog box includes the following options:
- Fade In and Fade Out areas to specify fade in and fade out values.
- "Lower background audio volume on slides with additional audio" to reduce the background volume on slides that have other audio files such as voiceover narration.
- "Loop audio" to play back the background audio over and over again.
- "Stop at end of movie" to stop the background audio when the movie ends.
Tip: There are a number of pre-recorded background sound loops and files in the MP3 format that ship with Captivate in the Program Files/Macromedia/Captivate/Gallery/Sound folder.
Select the file and click Open. The Import Audio dialog box closes, and you are returned to the Background Audio dialog box.
To preview your sound file, click the Play button.
When you are finished, click OK to close the dialog box. The background audio is added to your movie.
Don't be afraid to experiment with the audio properties of your movie and see what exciting audio effects you can come up with. Have fun!
